KCET 2025: Karnataka has 32 private universities, 17 of which offer professional courses. KEA plans to introduce a joint entrance exam for private universities from next year. See details here.
Regular entrance test: From the academic year 2025-26, private universities offering professional courses in the state will not conduct a separate entrance test. By the instructions of the Department of Secondary Education, the universities have established a partnership and agreed to waive the entrance exams. In a meeting with the Minister of Secondary Education Dr. M.C. Sodakar, members of 17 universities participated. It was decided to use one of the existing standardized entrance exams. Of the 27 private universities, 17 offer professional courses.
Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. "Some (private universities) have decided to consider JEE marks while some have shown interest in KCET and some in COMEDK. It is their choice," Sudhakar said. However, the department suggested that private universities should consider conducting an entrance test for all institutions. The minister also said that in the future the government will offer an entrance exam for admission to public courses in universities to check special programs
In this meeting, the issue of high tuition fees to private universities was also discussed. The universities were directed to set up a fee determination committee, chaired by a retired judge to fix and regulate the fee structure. Higher Education Minister Dr MC Sudhakar said, "There is a rule for each university and we have asked that the fees be fixed only by committees."
The fee for 40% of the professional course seats in private universities is filled through KCET which is decided every year by the authorities. In a move forward in private universities, the government is also considering a unified law that will bring all private universities under one umbrella. Currently, each university operates under its law.
